Webb India is associated with the manufacture of assembly
lines for automobiles. The office space and workshops have
been designed and executed by Shibanee & Kamal Architects
and Total Environment.
The office space is designed around an airy courtyard. The
external facade is a combination of natural wire cut bricks
and granite butch work. A central panel has vertical glass
fins as a detail (these have been accurately cut with the
help of sophisticated software). Wooden Louvres also form
part of the external detail.
The courtyard has vertical glass
fins on one side and a skylight above. Chains suspended from
the ceiling carry plants. The workshops situated behind the
office, house the manufacturing unit for the conveyor systems.
Each workshop bay has a skylight, which lets in light and
provides ventilation. Earth beams provided against the workshop
building diminish the perception of height and reduce noise.
The areas between both the buildings are covered with pergolas.
The spaces are full of interesting details like a yellow wall
that accentuates the glass railing on the first floor.
The campus is designed with meeting rooms, server room, structural
/ electrical /mechanical engineering rooms, training and class
rooms, store
and rest rooms and a waste water treatment facility.
This
project
has won the Commendation Trophy and
Citation for "The Institutional Architecture Award",
A+D and Spectrum Foundation Architecture Awards 2002. It also
received a special mention for "The young enthused architect
award".
